Ralph Delivers--at Work and Onstage
During the day, Ralph Stewart delivers packages. At night, he delivers onstage as a comedian. The funny thing is that Stewart did not start out to be a stand-up comic. He wanted to be a writer and enrolled in a comedy writing workshop. When he got there, he found out that it was a stand-up workshop and "graduation" consisted of the class performing routines on a nightclub stage. But after that first taste of the limelight Stewart decided to keep coming back for more. And audiences have been laughing ever since. Comedy crowds always take delight in hearing about the trials and tribulations that Stewart has with his roommate--his dad. "Parents, you can't live with them. You can't live free without them." But it's definitely an intergenerational thing when Stewart tells his tales. "I live with my elderly father and have custody of my teen-age daughter," he tells audiences. "So it's kind of like living with Fred Sanford and Punky Brewster." He also chats about his brother, who got caught after robbing a convenience store. First, the police caught him while he was waiting for a bus, trying to make his getaway. "Then they took him back to the store for a positive ID. The clerk came out of the back, and he said, 'Yeah, that's the lady I robbed.'" Now, Stewart kids, his brother sends him jokes. "And I send him magazines--like Time and Life." Music also is another big part of Stewart's life and audiences always can count on a song parody or two.
